• 1982

  Smiths established

  Alan Smith starts out with one excavator and himself as the only operator. Based from home.

• 1983

  Early expansion

  Smiths take on second member of staff and purchase a second machine.

• 1983 - 1993

  Rapid growth

  Rapid growth with contract work.

• 1990

  More expansion

  Company is split into component parts comprised of: Smiths Construction, Smiths Transport and Smiths Plant Hire.

• 1992

  Smiths Demolition Division formed

  Smiths Demolition Division formed.

• 1994

  Smiths acquires land at Eastington

  Smiths acquire land with a view of one day creating a Head Office.

• 1998

  Work starts on Eastington

  Work starts on Alkerton Court, Eastington – creating the Head Office.

• 2000

  Smith's (Gloucester) Limited incorporated

  Smith’s (Gloucester) Limited incorporated. New Divisional structure created. Waste Management Division formed.

• 2002

  Moreton Valence Waste Management Facility opened

  Moreton Valence Waste Management Facility opened.

• 2003

  Smiths opens Waste Transfer Station in Tewkesbury

  Smiths opens Waste Transfer Station in Tewkesbury.

• 2004

  Smiths completes it's first £1million contract

  Smiths completes its first £1million Construction contract.

• 2005

  South Wales depot opened

  South Wales Construction depot opened in Miskin. Closed in 2009.

• 2006

  Purpose-built Managed Recycling Facility installed

  MRF installed at Moreton Valence.

• 2007

  Haulage fleet exceeds 100 vehicles for the first time

• 2007

  2nd Generation of the Smith family joins the company

  First member of the 2nd Generation Smith family joins the Smiths business.

• 2008

  Smiths staff exceeds 500 for the first time

• 2008

  Smiths Trade Waste service formed

• 2010

  Recession hits

  Recession causes Smiths to decrease number of tipper lorries and increase number of waste vehicles. Winners of the Stroud Life Awards – Green Business Of The Year 2010.

• 2011

  Smiths acquire a Skip Hire company in South Wales

• 2011

  Smiths opens South Wales Waste Transfer Station

  Smiths opens Waste Transfer Station at Llandough Trading Estate, Cardiff. Winners of the Stroud Life Awards – Family Business Of The Year 2011.

• 2012

  Smiths acquire a second Skip Hire company in Gloucestershire

• 2012

  Smiths celebrates 30 years of service excellence

• 2015

  Smiths acquire a 3rd Skip Hire company

• 2015

  Smiths Trade Waste 1,500 customers

  The Trade Waste business exceeded 1,500 customers under contract.

• 2015-2018

  Licence to Undertake Work with Asbestos Re-awarded

  Re-awarded an Asbestos Removal Licence for 3 years.

• 2016

  Smiths acquire a 4th Skip Hire company

• 2017

  Smiths Construction invest in 3D GPS Laser Controlled equipment

• 2017

  James Hopkins Trust charity support

  Smiths raise £16,842 for JHT.

• 2017

  New RCVs

  Smiths Trade Waste take delivery of their first brand new vehicle.

• 2018

  Active trade waste sites reach almost 3300

  The largest number of active sites since the formation of the Trade Waste Division in 2008.

• 2018

  Staff numbers exceed 500

  Full time staff employed across England and Wales exceed 500.

• 2019

  Smiths acquire Bristol and Avon Waste Management

  Operating out of Avonmouth.

• 2020

  Covid 19 Pandemic

  Wheelie bin waste collection suspended by customers up to 50%.

• 2021

  New MRF facility

  New MRF facility installed at Moreton Valence.

• 2022

  Ermin Plant Hire

  Ermin Plant Hire acquired.

  40th anniversary celebrated.

• 2024

  Brook Farm

  Purchase of Brook Farm.
